Throwback Thursday: ‘Mother’ by Danzig

Danzig (Dan-zig):
Noun
1. The German name for Gdańsk in Poland.
2. Glenn Danzig, lead vocalist and songwriter/composer for the band Danzig.

We all know the song “Mother.” It didn’t get much attention in the mainstream in its initial release on Danzig’s self-titled album. Those of us who had a copy of that prior to 1993, always recommended that song.

What happened in 1993? Danzig released the EP Thrall: Demonsweatlive. The first three songs on the album were recorded in a studio. The second part of the album had a handful of live songs taken from a 1992 Halloween performance in Irvine, California. This included awesome sounding live tracks for “Snakes of Christ” from Lucifuge and “Am I Demon?”

Another awesome live track on the EP was “Mother.” “Mother” would be the second video from the EP, following the rather disturbing video for “It’s Coming Down” (in which a man drives a nail through his penis). The video was kind of there for a little bit, then it got played in Beavis and Butthead.

Beavis and Butthead gave the video a thumbs up and the next thing you know “Mother” is being played everywhere. Danzig was elevated from cult status to mainstream recognizability overnight and the rest is history.

Anyway, before Thrall: Demonsweatlive, there was another video for “Mother.” I’m sharing it with you this Throwback Thursday because it was released in 1988, 30 years ago.
